Leicestershire County Council's Interpretation and Translation Service

In addition to English, over 50 different community languages are spoken in the County and there are approximately 10,000 pupils of minority ethnic heritage in Leicestershire schools.

Leicestershire County Council is the largest public service provider in the County. These services include Education, Social Care, Highways, Waste Management and Community Services which includes the Libraries, Museums and Country Parks Services for the County. The Council is committed to delivering these services to all members of the local community in a fair and equal way. Anyone in contact with the Council who experiences a communications barrier is entitled to access interpreting and translation services.

Arrangements for interpreting and translating are made through the Council’s Public Relations Unit and can be obtained through the Unit’s Language Coordinator. Interpreters may be booked to visit service users to help officers communicate with them and any written translation work can also be arranged and provided. In order to enhance this service further, the County Council also uses the services of telephone interpreting company.

Ujala Resource Centre, Leicester City Community Health Service

To serve the diverse population of Leicester city, the Ujala Resource Centre provides interpreting and translating services for all communication/language support within the health sector in particular, across Leicester and Leicestershire. Interpreting services are provided by trained face to face interpreters where possible and/or by facilitating the services of telephone interpreters from outside agencies where necessary. Sign language interpreters and guide communicators are facilitated for health practitioners via Action Deafness and VISTA. The centre provides a translation and typesetting service in several languages using specialised computer software. The services provided by the centre can only be accessed by health practitioners or other care professionals, who can either phone in with a request or fax it through
