Level 3 Certificate in Bilingual Skills (CBS)

Background The CBS was first introduced in 1986 and demonstrates the IoL's commitment to language training for the workplace and the DfES's National Language Strategy. The Strategy was revised with a more learner / provider - friendly format in May 2006. The CBS course is officially accredited by the Qualification and Curriculum Authority (QCA).

The CBS is an 'A' Level equivalent award that aims to establish a benchmark of competence at foundation level for those working or intending to work in the public services or voluntary sector where practical bilingual skills are a necessary attribute.

Course Criteria and Duration
  • Candidates are admitted on the CBS course subject to a pre-course test based on the "Format of Delivery and Exams". See below. Candidates are assessed in English both Oral and Written and Other Language both Oral and Written.
  • Length of the course is 90 hours i.e. over one academic year and held between September/October till mid May of each given academic year.
Format of Delivery / Exams
  • Role Play - in bilingual context i.e. English and Other Languages
  • Sight Translation - i.e. from /into English
  • Written Translation - i.e. from /into English
  • Letter Writing - i.e. in English and in Other Languages
Relevance
  • A practical, vocational alternative to a traditional 'A' Level, for all those working in the public or voluntary sector and who wish to use their language skills in their workplace.
  • All tasks in the examination are based on real-life situations in a public service context e.g. Local Government, Health Service, Social Services, Education etc.
Potential
  • Demonstrates proven capability in English and other languages at foundation level. Whether already employed or looking for a new career you will be qualified to use your language skills and improving your career prospects.
  • A useful starting point for those wishing to become professional interpreters. The CBS is a stepping stone towards the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) and is a higher professional level examination offered by the IoLET

  • Wide range of languages covered and examination available in more than 4O languages
  • Tailored examination: if you have specific needs and provided there are sufficient candidates and examination can be devised to cater for those, e.g. for those in branch of the Health or Probation Services.
